A Reminder About Deer Safety in Michigan After Our Weekend Accident

This weekend, John and I were on our way to one of the grandkids’ soccer games at
10 o’clock in the morning when something unexpected happened. A deer suddenly jumped directly into traffic and collided with our vehicle.
Most people think of deer movement happening at dusk or very early morning, and that is usually true. But in this case, it appeared something was chasing or spooking the deer, causing it to run unpredictably across the road in broad daylight.
Thankfully, everyone in our vehicle was okay. I am still a little shaken up today, but incredibly grateful we were able to safely pull over and even drive the vehicle to the repair shop afterward.
Living in Michigan means sharing the roads with wildlife, especially north of the M-46 corridor and in wooded or rural areas. Deer accidents are more common than many people realize, and they can happen fast with very little warning.
A few important reminders if you ever experience a deer collision:
If possible, safely stop and report the accident right away.
In many situations, deer accidents are considered collision claims with insurance.
Stay far away from traffic if you need to exit your vehicle.
Turn on hazard lights and remain aware of surrounding vehicles.
Deer often travel in groups, so if you see one, others may be nearby.
Larger vehicles often provide additional protection during wildlife collisions.
Most importantly, remember that even careful drivers can find themselves in these situations. Wildlife movement is unpredictable.
This experience reminded me how quickly life can change in a moment and how thankful we should be when everyone walks away safely. We are counting our blessings this week.
